A silversword, one of Hawaii's unique, endemic plants. Silverswords filled all of Kauai's carrying capacity -- the number of species a particular ecosystem can support - within about 3 million years after the island formed, and the plants have been losing species since then. The photo was taken on the slopes of Haleakalā on East Maui.
