Overnight Mosquito Trap Diagram (IMAGE)
Caption
Researchers in Australia have tested modifications to two common types of mosquito traps to allow mosquito excreta, or liquid waste droplets, to be collected for virus detection. A diagram shows how overnight mosquito traps were modified: (a) a mesh sleeve to attach to collection container and trap motor, (b) plastic cup serving as an entry funnel for captured mosquitoes, (c) feeding substances secured with magnets, (d) mesh protecting the polycarbonate insert; (e) polycarbonate insert, (f) lid. Liquid waste from mosquitoes feeding in the trap falls through the mesh onto the polycarbonate sheet, which is then collected with a nucleic acid preservation card, which can preserve viral RNA at room temperature for later testing.
