Blazar TXS 0506+056: Cosmic Messengers Trace Cosmic Radiation (VIDEO) Max Planck Institute for Physics This video is under embargo. Please login to access this video. Caption Blazar TXS 0506+056 is an Active Galactic Nucleus hosting a supermassive black hole emitting two jets. High-energy protons in the jets give rise to neutrinos and light particles (photons) of high energy. On September 22, 2017, the IceCube experiment detected a cosmic neutrino. Gamma-ray observations by Fermi-LAT and MAGIC showed that the most likely originated from the blazar. What is more, these findings may help to answer a long-standing question: What is the source of cosmic radiation? It is made up by protons which are deflected by magnetic fields and cannot be traced back to their source. Combining the messages of the neutrino and gamma-rays, TXS 0506+056 is a likely candidate source for cosmic radiation. Credit E. Bernardini, K.
