Silver Thin-Film with Particles

This scanning electron microscopy image shows a thin film of silver deposited over plastic nanoparticles. Dissolving the particles leaves a precise pattern of honeycomb-like holes that allow light to pass through, producing an electrically conductive and optically transparent film.
