木星の厚い雲の下にはアンモニアが渦まく (IMAGE)

木星大気の大赤斑付近を表したVLAによる電波地図には、アンモニアガスの複雑な上昇流と下降流が見られる（上）。これにより、ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡による本物に近い色の地図に見られるような、色鮮やかな雲の層が形成される（下）。雲の下30～90キロメートルを調べ、2種類の電波波長を青色（2 cm）と金色（3 cm）で示した。
