Farmland size is crucial to climate impact. 'The importance of the size of farmed area has not really been taken into account before. This is a major oversight, as our study shows that the effect of the resulting deforestation can be many times greater than the greenhouse gas emissions, which are usually included. This is also serious, because in Sweden, we have political goals to actually increase organic farming,' says Stefan Wirsenius, Associate Professor at the Division of Physical Resource Theory, Department of Space, Earth and Environment at Chalmers.
