Archaeologist Thomas Emerson and his colleagues found that the Illinois Hopewell people had a different relationship to their pipestone pipes than the Hopewell people of Ohio, who imported their pipes from Illinois makers. The Hopewell era extended from about 50 B.C. to A.D. 250.
