Michael Herrmann, a doctoral student at the University of Vermont, observed and collected harvester ants during their summer mating swarms in the Arizona/New Mexico desert. He and his colleague, Sara Helms Cahan, made new discoveries about the ants' sexual behavior reported in the journal The Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
