AIRS Microwave Image of Choi-Wan (IMAGE) NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Caption This microwave image of Choi-Wan was created on Sept. 18 at 12:17 a.m. EDT combining AIRS and AMSU data. Cold areas in this image (yellow-green) stretch from Japan (top right) east (and out of range of the satellite swath) indicate precipitation or ice in the cloud tops. The purple area (around the eye) has the coldest cloud temperatures to -63F and suggests cloud heights to the 200 millibar level, near the tropopause.
