Mimmi Oksman Uses the Microscope to Study Diatoms

Mimmi Oksman uses the microscope to study diatoms that live in the ocean´s uppermost water layer and are deposited to sediments as they die. Diatoms react sensitively to changes in their living environment, which can be seen as changes in their species composition. Past climate variability can be reconstructed by analyzing fossil diatom assemblages and applying a so-called transfer function method that is based on modern species ? environment relationships.
