(a) Wenn Adsorbate an Metall binden, induzieren sie elektrische Dipole im Metall. Elektronen, die sich im Metall bewegen, können mit diesen induzierten Dipolen kollidieren und ihre Energie verlieren. (b+c) Die Effizienz dieser Kollision hängt von der Richtung der induzierten Dipole ab und damit von der Chemie des Adsorbaten.
