Ronald Zuckermann (left) and Michael Connolly hold a model of a protein in a beta sheet arrangement. Aggregates of proteins misfolded into this shape are the disease-causing agents in numerous fatal neurodegenerative diseases. The team's peptoid-coated magnetic beads can bind to these aggregates, allowing scientists to detect them in samples of body fluids.
