Video of Peptoid Binding (VIDEO)
Caption
This animation shows how specially engineered peptoids - synthetic analogs of peptides - can bind to aggregates of misfolded prion proteins, which are the disease-causing agents in numerous fatal neurodegenerative diseases. When bound to tiny magnetic beads, the peptoids can isolate prion aggregates (and protein aggregates involved in other diseases) in samples of bodily fluids. This technology represents a huge advance, as there are currently no efficient, non-invasive diagnostic tests for protein aggregate diseases.
