Controlling Inflated Blood Vessels (7 of 7) (IMAGE)
Caption
Repression of Notch4* expression results in the restoration of venous markers (EphB4), and the suppression of arterial markers (EphrinB2, Dll4, Jag1, and Cx40) in the arteriovenous connection. The arteriovenous connection regresses though a mechanism dependent on signaling by the re-expressed venous marker EphB4. Regression does not require the loss of endothelial cells, and occurs without signs of thrombosis or hemorrhage. Ultimately, the vasculature is normalized structurally and functionally. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 18, 2012, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by Dr. P.A. Murphy of the University of California, San Francisco in San Francisco, Calif., and colleagues, was titled, “Notch4 Normalization Reduces Blood Vessel Size in Arteriovenous Malformations.”
