The Agta in Camp near the Beach (IMAGE)
Caption
This 1965 photo by Thomas Headland shows the Agta sitting in the shade of dried-leaf-thatched huts. The Agta, an indigenous Philippine group, are one of the hunter-gatherer societies whose co-residence patterns were studied by an international team of anthropologists led by Arizona State University professor Kim Hill. By examining census data on recent hunter-gatherers, the researchers determined that the biological success of humans likely stems from the species’ ancestral social structure. These findings are reported in the March 11 edition of the journal Science.
