FACET (IMAGE) DOE/SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Caption SLAC is upgrading its Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET) -- a test bed for new technologies that could revolutionize the way we build particle accelerators. FACET-II will use the middle third of the lab's 2-mile-long linear accelerator (SLAC ground plan at top). It will send a beam of electrons (bottom, blue line) from the electron source (bottom left) to the experimental area (bottom right), where it will arrive with an energy of 10 billion electronvolts. The design allows for adding the capability to produce and accelerate positrons (bottom, red line) later.
