Loss of neuronal connections (so-called „synapses") results from a three-part interaction between neurons, T cells and phagocytes in the inflamed brain. A neuron (yellow) is attacked by a T lymphocyte (red) and enveloped by a phagocyte (blue) capturing neuronal synapses.
