The recently discovered and ultra-rare immune cells innate lymphoid cells (ILCs, in gray) outcompete and exert a measurable control on the survival of the abundant T-cells (pink). This is possible because T cells decrease the number of IL-7 receptors (IL-7R, represented as butterfly nets) after binding IL-7, while ILCs do not.
