Purple Sandpiper and Sanderling

This is a purple sandpiper (left) and a sanderling on an Oak Bluffs beach on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. These two shorebirds depend on coastal habitats in Massachusetts during migration and winter. Purple sandpipers prefer rocky shorelines, while sanderlings feed in the surf line along open beaches.
