目で検出された視覚情報は視覚視床（感覚器官から皮質の感覚野へ情報伝達を調節している皮質下の構造体）を通り、１次視覚皮質へと運ばれる。この情報の流れの調節には、最深部の皮質層である第6層が関与していることが知られている。
