Visible Symptoms of Beech Leaf Disease on American Beech Leaves (IMAGE)

Darkened, thickened bands between leaf veins—seen here on an American beech leaf—are characteristic symptoms of beech leaf disease (BLD). First detected in northeastern Ohio in 2012, BLD has since spread across 15 U.S. states and Ontario, Canada. A new long-term study near the disease’s epicenter is the first to empirically document its effects, revealing 30% mortality and slowed growth among affected trees. Researchers warn the disease could have lasting impacts on eastern North American forests.
