“This graph compares negative economic growth and positive economic growth; and their impact on the poor or on poverty reduction. We see that when the economy is growing positively, poverty reduction benefits more significantly compared to when the economy is shrinking. This means that when the economy grows, the poor benefit more”, says Prof Nicholas Ngepah from the University of Johannesburg. Ngepah published a first-of-its-kind analysis of district-level data in the Journal of African Economies at https://doi.org/10.1093/jae/ejae020.
