The existence of a bottleneck, indicating a reduction in genetic variation, during Neandertal evolution. The genetic variation in the pre-Neandertals from the Sima de los Huesos is similar to that in the early Neanderthals from Krapina, but shows a decline in the later “classic” Neandertals.
