Three-Stage Theory (IMAGE) University of Washington Caption These panels show the new theory for the three phases that ended the Snowball Earth event. In the first stage, thick ice sheets separate most of the atmosphere and ocean. In the second stage, freshwater flows into the ocean to join meltwater floating on the ocean’s surface. In the final stage, ocean mixing resumes, allowing exchanges between the atmosphere, upper ocean and deep ocean.
