The method (IMAGE)
Caption
The image illustrates how fingerprints on a gelatin lifter (A) are scanned using DESI-MS. A very fine spray of electrically charged methanol droplets (not visible) is sprayed onto the surface of the gelatin lifter (B). Where the spray hits, chemical substances are released from the fingerprint, which are then drawn into the instrument and measured (C). By moving the holder (D), on which the gelatin lifter is mounted, very slowly (0.2 mm/s), the entire area with fingerprints is scanned with a resolution of 0.0025 mm—sufficient to see the details in the fingerprint pattern.
