Stained mitochrondria in C. elegans

Caption

A cluster of nematodes, C. elegans, after activation of the olfactory circuits that sense bacteria. The cells within each nematode, in particular the gut cells, fluoresce green, indicating that their mitochondria have initiated a stress response in preparation for an attack by the bacteria.
