Sámi drum (IMAGE)
Caption
Drums were an important part of Sámi religious practice. Thomas von Westen confiscated more than 100 ceremonial Sámi drums in the 18th century, one of these being the Folldal drum from Namdalen. This is a replica of the drum, made by Jean Louis Pageot, based on the ethnographer Ernst Manker’s great work on ceremonial Sámi drums (‘Die lappische Zauber drumI’).
