The study builds from a living-tissue model the researchers developed that lets them initiate the death of a single oligodendrocyte—the central nervous system cells that produce myelin—to observe how surrounding cells react. This video shows how cell death in a young brain triggers surrounding cells to replenish lost myelin, which is essential for the transmission of signals between neurons.
