Cane toad (IMAGE) Aarhus University Caption A cane toad sits in the grass. Cane toads were brought to Australia from South America in the 1930s to fight off insects that ate the crops. Unfortunately the cane toad didn't have any effect on the insects, but it spread like a wildfire throughout the continent and outcompeted several other species. One of the explanations is that no Australian predators wants to eat the toad because of it's poisonous skin.
