The in situ synchrotron small-angle x-ray scattering compression setup permits simultaneous, real-time measurement of collagen deformation during whole-disc compression. During SAXS acquisition, the high-energy incident X-ray beam is passed through the disc at mid-annulus, and a detector captures the scattering pattern.
