Successful v. unsuccessful phage reboot (IMAGE) Northwestern University Caption The dish on the left shows an unsuccessful phage reboot. No phages are present, so the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa (one of the five most deadly human pathogens) experience unimpeded growth. The dish on the right, however, shows bacteria infected with the phage. The dark spots mark where the phage burst out of the bacteria, killing them.
