Memory T cells formed after BA.2 Omicron breakthrough infection showed a strong immune response not only against BA.2 but also later Omicron variants including BA.4/BA.5, XBB, and others. By suffering from Omicron breakthrough infection, the immune system gained the ability to handle future infections from emerging variants. This research shows that experiencing Omicron breakthrough infection can prevent a patient from progressing into severe COVID-19 when encountering new variants of the virus in the future.
