UW–Madison scientists engineered strains of Novosphingobium aromaticivorans to produce carotenoids, organic pigments that give carrots and salmon their colors and a popular form of nutritional supplements. By combining two genetic mutations, researchers discovered the bacterium can simultaneously make carotenoids and key ingredients of plastics from underutilized biomass.
