Hylomys peguensis (IMAGE) Smithsonian Caption Hylomys peguensis photographed in Wang Nam Khiao District, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. A new study led by scientists at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History describes five new species of soft-furred hedgehogs from Southeast Asia. The study, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, used DNA analysis and physical characteristics to describe two entirely new species of soft-furred hedgehogs and elevate three subspecies to the level of species. H. peguensis measures 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) in length and is found in numerous countries in mainland Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. Its fur is a bit more yellow colored than that of the other new species. Credit Charoenchai Tothaisong, CC BY-NC 4.0 DEED.
