PEG: polyethylene glycol, non-ionic compound of high osmolarity. Hoagland: control nutrient solution. (Note that both the salts and the PEG used in the experiments were dissolved in Hoagland.) The Hoagland solution, the leaves exposed only to osmotic stress (different concentrations of PEG treatment) and the 300 mM KCl solution showed a nice greening of the leaves, whereas the lowest three treatments did not show any greening.
