SWUIS Testing (IMAGE) Southwest Research Institute Caption Southwest Research Institute’s Dr. Alan Stern, a planetary scientist and associate vice president of Southwest Research Institute’s Space Sector, flew aboard the Virgin Galactic commercial spaceship Unity on a suborbital space mission. In this image, Stern demonstrates a mockup of the camera used in the Southwest Ultraviolet Imaging System (SWUIS), an innovative, wide-field, visible and ultraviolet imager he will use on a second suborbital flight to evaluate the spacecraft’s suitability for making astronomy observations in space.
