For Journalists:
Science journalism in a polarised world: entry barriers, online abuse and how to tackle them
Thursday, February 19, 2026 at 10:30 AM U.S. Eastern Time
What obstacles to aspiring science journalists face when they want to break into the industry? What’s the experience of today’s science journalists in an increasingly polarised and fragmented online world - do they experience criticism for what they write?
These are some of the questions the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) and the Science Communication Unit (SCU) at the University of the West of England, UK, asked in a large-scale survey of science journalists. In this webinar, Dr Andy Ridgway, at UWE and Vera Novais, at the ABSW, will present insights from the survey, describing the most common barriers blocking aspiring science journalists - and also their experiences of workplace and online harassment. The research is relevant to anyone publishing science online - but also the sector as a whole, given the implications what science does and does not get reported.
The ABSW and Science Communication Unit, working as a Hub of the newly formed European Competence Centre for Science Communication, plan to use insights from the research to provide support for science journalists and writers. Join us in this webinar to discuss how aspiring journalists and writers can be better supported at the start of their careers - and cope with some of the challenges of working in it.
