Alexandria, Va., USA - The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Christopher Murray, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, Seattle, USA, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Honorary Membership Award. Murray was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.
Murray is Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, and Institute Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. As both a physician and a health economist, his work has led to the development of a range of new methods and empirical studies to strengthen health measurement, analyze the performance of public health and medical care systems and assess the cost-effectiveness of health technologies.
Murray has been advocating the improvement of health, including oral health, for everyone worldwide. He is a founder of the Global Burden of Disease project, a systematic effort to quantify the comparative magnitude of health loss due to diseases, injuries and risk factors by age, sex and geography over time. The project now has a network of thousands of collaborators across 150 countries and it regularly publishes estimates of disease morbidity and mortality. The oral health data show the huge impact of dental diseases on disability-adjusted life-years in the world, in particular in the developing countries.
Murray holds Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., USA, a D.Phil. in International Health Economics from Oxford University, England, and a M.D. from Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass., USA. He has authored and edited 16 books, many book chapters and over 380 journal articles in internationally peer-reviewed publications.
