Gill receives funding for rainier beach: A beautiful safe place for youth evaluation

Grant and Award Announcement

George Mason University

Charlotte Gill, Associate Professor/Deputy Director, Criminology, Law and Society, is serving as Principal Investigator on an ongoing evaluation of "Rainier Beach: A Beautiful Safe Place for Youth (ABSPY)," a community-led, place-based youth crime prevention project in crime hot spots in the Rainier Beach neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Gill and researchers working with Mason's Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy (CEBCP) are conducting an annual survey of crime hot spots in Rainier Beach and comparison areas elsewhere in the city of Seattle.

For this project, researchers will conduct a community survey in summer 2020 as a follow-up to the baseline survey CEBCP previously managed in the same locations in 2014, and the 2016-2019 annual follow-up surveys. CEBCP will hire and manage four local researchers and one team leader in Seattle. This research team will receive training in survey data collection and field research from CEBCP staff, conduct an updated residential census of the target and comparison areas, and conduct approximately 300 in-person, door-to-door or street surveys.

CEBCP will also continue to provide data analysis support to the ABSPY core team as needed. This will be in the form of quarterly data reports based on data received from the Seattle Police Department. Reports will examine crime incident and call for service trends in the target and comparison areas.

The project's budget provides for project supervision and oversight from CEBCP senior staff, a CEBCP graduate research assistant to conduct data entry and analysis, travel to Seattle for CEBCP staff to conduct survey training and oversight, supplies costs for survey instruments and data collection tools, and incentive payments to survey participants in the form of gift cards.

Gill received $58,710 from the City of Seattle for this work. Funding for this project began in January 2020 and will conclude in late December of this year.
