Economic value in recreational fisheries

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Using survey data collected during 2014-2016 to estimate the potential benefits of reform in the recreational red snapper fishery in the Gulf of Mexico, researchers found that a policy scenario in which recreational fishing vessels secure rights to a portion of the annual fish catch facilitates year-round fishing within baseline fish harvest limits and results in an increase in annual benefits to recreational anglers equivalent to $12.3 million, according to the authors.
