New York, NY (Aug. 1, 2018) - The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute today announced a strategic partnership with Korean firms ToolGen, Inc., and nSAGE, Inc.. In a Memorandum of Understanding, the organizations agreed to collaborate in the development of innovative therapeutics by leveraging cutting-edge gene editing and stem cell technologies. NYSCF will be a strategic partner to a new company being created for this purpose by ToolGen and nSAGE.

"NYSCF is committed to harnessing stem cell research to develop better therapeutics for the major diseases of our time," says Susan L. Solomon, NYSCF CEO. "We are excited to embark on this partnership with ToolGen and nSAGE, leaders in gene editing and stem cell engineering technologies, to bring their expertise to bear on translational disease research."

"We are thrilled to be collaborating with NYSCF, a gold-standard laboratory for stem cell research," added Bonghee Lee, DVM, PhD, nSAGE CEO. "The primary goal of this collaboration is to achieve the first human trials of safe genome-engineered stem cells for curing intractable diseases. By integrating the complementary expertise of NYSCF and ToolGen with our team, we are confident we can make an impact on this area in the United States."

The NYSCF Research Institute is a pioneer in stem cell technology, having developed the first automated robotic platform for reprogramming adult cells such as skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. nSAGE is a laboratory specialized in advanced stem cell engineering that will play a crucial role in the research planned among the parties. ToolGen is a leading biotech company focused on the revolutionary development and application of CRISPR-related gene editing technology.

"The focus of ToolGen is to translate genome editing technology into valuable therapeutic products, and we recognize that collaboration with other experts and institutions is essential for that," says Jongmoon Kim, ToolGen CEO. "We could not hope for better partners than NYSCF and nSAGE to lead the development of advanced cell therapy products by combining stem cell resources and gene editing technology."
