When is the right time? How can I meet the demands of a professorship whilst caring for a young family? Choosing to become a mother has a profound effect on the career path of women holding academic positions, especially in the physical sciences. In this revised edition of the popular book "Mom the Chemistry Professor", 40 women US-based chemistry professors describe the challenges and rewards of combining motherhood with an academic career in chemistry. The book will be promoted during a "Meet the Editors" session at the upcoming American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting in Boston in the US from 19 to 23 August 2018.

"While the number of female faculty members in the US is increasing slowly, the limited number of accessible role models may lead undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs to perceive an academic career as incompatible with having children," explains Kimberly Woznack, one of the editors of the book.

The second edition of "Mom the Chemistry Professor" contains personal stories from women of a variety of backgrounds about how they found their own work-life satisfaction as parents and chemistry professors. An introductory chapter describes some of the general challenges that face women in academia in the US, and there is a special chapter highlighting the safety issues to consider when working in a lab during pregnancy.

"The editorial team, consisting of current and past members and the current and a past chair of the WCC, were so happy to work with Springer on this project," Woznack says.

Charlotte Hollingworth, Senior Publishing Editor at Springer Nature said: "The personal accounts shared in this book help to raise awareness of the barriers women face in academia and will also hopefully inspire today's female students to consider an academic career in science. The upcoming 'Meet the Editors' event will be a fantastic opportunity for our readers to ask questions, share experiences and support the promotion of women in chemistry."

The book is published in partnership with the Women Chemists Committee (WCC) of the ACS. A "Meet the Editors" session will be held from 5.30-6.30pm (EDT) on Sunday 19 June 2018 at the Springer Nature booth in the Boston Convention Center as part of the ACS Fall Meeting 2018.
