Anti-HIV microbicide production in rice

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Researchers developed transgenic lines of rice expressing three HIV-neutralizing proteins, and report that crude extracts from the grains of the plants neutralized HIV in vitro more effectively than the purified proteins, with maximum activity found in extracts containing all three proteins, suggesting a potential platform for low-cost production of potent anti-HIV agents for the developing world.
