A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on scientific, technical, economic, and industrial cooperation was signed amongst UNIST, University of California San Diego (UC San Diego), the City of San Diego, and Ulsan Metropolitan City on March 1, 2018.

The ceremony was attended by UNIST President Mooyoung Jung, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer of the City of San Diego, Deputy Mayor Heo Un-wook of Ulsan Metropolitan City, as well as other key personnel from UC San Diego.

In the MoU, four organizations promised to support economic development and academic innovation partnership initiatives between the two regions and share common goals of fostering economic growth in business clusters in fast-evolving areas, such as intelligent transportation, smart industry and technology, genomics and biomedical research.

Through this partnership, the parties will facilitate further technological collaborations to initiate the development of fully-automated vehicles and the Smart Transportation Innovation Project (STIP), thereby taking the lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

This MoU reaffirms the common bonds of friendship between UNIST and UC San Diego and builds upon the fruitful relationship that exists between the two universities. UNIST has been working closely with UC San Diego since the signing of the MoU for the furtherance of collaborative research and technological commercialization in August 2016.

The parties expect that the signing of this MoU will encourage government, academia, and businesses in both regions to continue the existing collaborations and pursue economic development opportunities jointly.

"This MoU will provide a great opportunity to boost collaborative research to benefit both cities," says President Jung. "Under this partnership, we hope to accelerate the advancement of autonomous vehicle technologies and to support the growth and introduction of smart transportation system."
