A Perspective discusses the Earth BioGenome Project, a 10-year scientific grand challenge to sequence, catalog, and characterize the genomes of all eukaryotic life on Earth, and assesses the challenges and implications of the project, including issues related to international coordination and governance, total project cost and economic benefits, and the conservation of biodiversity on Earth.
