Springer and the international Mathematical Research Institute MATRIX, which is based in Melbourne in Australia, have signed a collaboration agreement to publish a new book series. The cooperation further strengthens Springer's relationship with the mathematical sciences in Australia, while also bringing the work of MATRIX and Australian mathematicians to an international audience.
The MATRIX Book Series draws on the expertise of internationally renowned editors David Wood (editor-in-chief), Cheryl Praeger, Jan de Gier, and Terence Tao. The first book in the series, the 2016 MATRIX Annals, documents the scientific activities at MATRIX during its inaugural year. It is due to be published at the beginning of 2018.
The research institute MATRIX was established in 2015 as a dedicated venue for Australian and international researchers as well as industry partners to collaborate on research problems in the mathematical sciences and their applications to science and industry. The directors of MATRIX are Jan de Gier, professor at The University of Melbourne, and David Wood, professor at Monash University.
MATRIX mirrors similar institutes in other countries such as the Banff International Research Station in Canada, Oberwolfach in Germany, the Newton Institute in the UK, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in the US.
David Wood said: "The Australian mathematics community has recognized for many years the need for an Australian residential institute for research in the mathematical sciences. The launch of MATRIX fills this gap. MATRIX hosted five research programmes in 2016, all with great success. Organisers and participants from across Australia and overseas have embraced the vision for MATRIX, as indicated by their enthusiastic contributions to this book."
