Elsevier celebrates 35 years of atlas excellence at Society for Neuroscience Meeting

Featuring 'The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates: Compact, Seventh Edition,' Six Additional Neuroscience Atlases, and ScienceDirect Topics at Booth # 301

Meeting Announcement

Elsevier

Cambridge, MA, November 1, 2017 - Elsevier, the information analytics business specializing in science and health, today announced the forthcoming publication of the seventh edition of The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates: Compact by George Paxinos and Charles Watson. This compact edition provides the coronal plates and diagrams of the current seventh edition in a smaller more convenient spiral format and at a student friendly price. Elsevier will display this new book, as well as six additional new and classic atlases, at the upcoming Society for Neuroscience's (SfN) 47th annual meeting, Neuroscience 2017, in Elsevier booth #301, from November 12-15 in Washington, D.C.

Along with these highly anticipated books, Elsevier will showcase ScienceDirect Topics, a free layer of content which provides a quick snapshot of definitions, terms and excerpts on scientific topics, built on Elsevier's highly trusted books and reference works. This new research enhancement allows different areas of knowledge to connect and form an exploratory network -- the optimal environment for intuitive learning.

Neuroscience 2017 attendees can meet distinguished authors including Drs. Paxinos and Watson, at the Elsevier booth on Sunday, November 12, 3:30 - 5:00 pm and Monday, November 13, 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm.

In 1982, Elsevier published the first full-sized edition of The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, ranked by Thomson ISI as one of the 50 most cited items in the Web of Science, and now in its seventh edition. During the past 35 years, Elsevier has published numerous atlases on the structure of the brains of humans and experimental animals, many by Dr. Paxinos. He paved the way for future neuroscience research by producing the first three-dimensional (stereotaxic) framework for placement of electrodes and injections in the brain of experimental animals, now used as an international standard.

Learn more about the history of these atlases in this post by Dr. Paxinos.

The seven featured neuroscience titles are:

  • The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates: Compact, Seventh Edition by George Paxinos and Charles Watson

  • Paxinos and Franklin's the Mouse Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, Fourth Edition by George Paxinos and Keith Franklin

  • The Mouse Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, Compact: The Coronal Plates and Diagrams, Third Edition by Keith Franklin and George Paxinos

  • Atlas of the Human Brain, 4th Edition by Juergen Mai, Milan Majtanik and George Paxinos

  • Human Brain in Standard MNI Space: A Comprehensive Pocket Atlas by Juergen Mai and Milan Majtanik

  • Paxinos and Ashwell's Atlas of the Developing Rat Nervous System, Fourth Edition by George Paxinos and Ken Ashwell

  • MRI/DTI Atlas of the Rat Brain by George Paxinos, Charles Watson, Evan Calabrese, Alexandra Badea and G. Allan Johnson

In order to meet content needs in neuroscience, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books, which will educate the next generation of neuroscientists, and provide critical foundational content for information professionals, are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.
