Gender perspectives in mathematics, information sciences, natural sciences and technology: The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has granted the joint project "Gendering MINT digital - Actively Shaping Open Science" with about 840,000 euros in funding. The Center for Anthropology and Gender Studies (ZAG) at the University of Freiburg is coordinating the project. The Centre for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) as well as the Faculty Media and Information at the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg are also involved in the project. Starting December 1, 2017, the project is slated to run for three years. "Our common goal is to strengthen gender skills in MINT in order to contribute to the cultural shift in research and teaching in these disciplines and to promote equal opportunities," reports ZAG coordinator Dr. Marion Mangelsdorf.

The new initiative can build on the results of the previously BMBF-funded project "Gendering MINT" whose objective was to document the current foothold gender research has in MINT, to provide networking forums and to utilize the results of previously successful initiatives for further projects.

"Gendering MINT digital" intends to construct teaching modules using audio-video materials as well as images and texts that convey the interdisciplinary topic of gender in MINT study programs. In the spirit of "Open Science", the modules should be made available online long-term for anyone interested. In terms of content, the modules will show what role aspects of diversity can play in medical diagnoses and treatment of disease or how, with the help of insights from gender research, the discriminating effects of technology due to gender stereotypes can be combatted in technical disciplines.
