American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

ALEXANDRIA, VA--The latest research on healthcare economics, sleep apnea, 3-D printed tissue, post-operative antibiotics, hearing loss, head and neck cancer and other topics related to the specialty of otolaryngology will be presented in San Diego, CA, September 18-21, during the 2016 Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO? of the American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. It is the largest meeting of ear, nose, throat, head and neck physicians in the world.

Abstracts of the research to be presented are now available online at http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl.toc. The 2016 Annual Meeting includes hundreds of research presentations. The Program Advisory Committee, comprised of physician members, selected 12 studies to highlight in recognition of outstanding scientific merit and innovation. They are:

Upper Airway Stimulation: German Post Market Study

Is selective stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve, which controls tongue movement, an effective new surgical therapy for obstructive sleep apnea?

ACA: Healthcare Economics for Academic and Private Practice

The Affordable Care Act and economic stresses have forced an evolution in the way medicine is practiced. This study explores the current structure of medicine and the attempted solutions. Physicians can adapt--not just to survive but to thrive.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P33.full#sec-1

Co-culture of 3-D Printed Scaffolds for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

A new technique may allow for the creation of patient-specific tissue engineering. For the first time, adipose-derived stem cells were co-cultured with chondrocytes on 3-D printed scaffolds to engineer facial and ear cartilage. Co-culturing potentially eliminates the need for prolonged cell culture, allowing translation into clinical use.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P130.full#sec-9

Multicenter Study: Effect of Antibiotic Choice on Post-operative Infection

Post-operative antibiotic prevention after free-flap tissue reconstructive surgery has been shown to reduce surgical site infections, but optimal antibiotic regimens and durations are unknown. This study looks at the broad spectrum of post-operative antibiotic prophylaxis.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P62.full#sec-31

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy for Chronic Rhinosinusitis

In vitro, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy has demonstrated efficacy for the eradication of bacterial associated with chronic sinusitis as well as anti-inflammatory properties. This study examines the therapy when applied in vivo to patients who have previously undergone sinus surgery. Might antimicrobial photodynamic therapy benefit the management of difficult chronic sinusitis in the future?
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P144.full#sec-4

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Effect on Hearing Outcome in Sudden SNHL

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment in which a patient inhales 100 percent oxygen while in a controlled total body chamber. Is it useful for treating sudden hearing loss--if so, how?
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P100.full#sec-49

Safety and Effectiveness of a Novel Absorbable Nasal Valve Implant

Nasal valves sometimes collapse and contribute to nasal obstruction. This study looks at the safety and effectiveness of an absorbable implant to support collapsed valves.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P40.full#sec-14

Early Neurocognitive Improvements following Parathyroidectomy

This study follows 50 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who undergo parathyroidectomy. As early as week one after surgery, improvements in neurocognitive function are noted, but are improvements sustained?
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P35.short#sec-6

The Development and Implementation of Mobile Stroboscopy Software

Detailed visuals of vocal fold vibration have traditionally required expensive equipment that is often limited to tertiary care centers. But now there's an app for that. Researchers are ready to present a viable alternative.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P46.full#sec-11

Cetuximab-IRDye800 Identifies Nodal Basin for Head and Neck Cancer

For this study, 14 head and neck cancer patients underwent lymph node mapping that was molecularly targeted based on antibody imaging. Findings demonstrate that systemically infused dye can be used to identify draining nodes in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, potentially providing intraoperative guidance for identification of positive lymph nodes and to improve resection rates.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P62.full#sec-1

Safety of Repeated Intratympanic AM101 in Acute Inner Ear Tinnitus

Injections to the tympanic membrane, or eardrum, are increasingly used for the treatment of cochlear disorders, but are repeated injections well tolerated?
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P100.full#sec-73

Tissue-Engineering Airway Mucosa for Tracheal Transplantation

Understanding tissue biology and engineering allows for the fabrication of a respiratory epithelial collagen sheet that can integrate within an engineered trachea in vivo. This research has the potential to greatly improve the safety and effectiveness of tissue-engineered airway transplants.
Abstract: http://oto.sagepub.com/content/155/1_suppl/P88.full#sec-33

The selected studies will be presented during the "Best of Orals" session on Sunday, September 18, at 10:00 am in Room 31A of the San Diego Convention Center.
