The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) -- the nation's largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging -- has chosen Susanne Wurm, PhD, of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg as the 2016 recipient of the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Foundation Award in Behavioral and Social Gerontology.

This distinguished honor, given annually, recognizes outstanding early career contributions in behavioral and social gerontology. Individuals who have received their doctorate within the last ten years are eligible. The award is given by GSA in conjunction with the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Foundation.

The award presentation will take place at GSA's 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting, which will be held from November 16 to 20 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This conference is organized to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, educators, and practitioners who specialize in the study of the aging process. Visit http://www.geron.org/2016 for further details.

Wurm is a professor of psychogerontology and the deputy director of the Institute of Psychogerontology at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Her work focuses on the promotion of healthy aging. Based on a psychological life-span perspective, she examines different psychosocial resources in their impact on health and longevity, while integrating epidemiological and sociological perspectives into her research. Most recently, she has examined the role of individual views on aging, how they can act as self-fulfilling prophecy, and how these views can be changed within the context of interventions.

She offers European leadership in the domain of healthy aging as deputy president of the Health Reporting and Health Monitoring Committee of the Robert Koch Institute, a member of the Advisory Board of the project Improving Health Monitoring in Old Age, a member of the Advisory Board in the Prevention Network for Healthy Aging, a member of the research network Labor Market Participation of Older Workers, and as co-chair of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Network on Internalized Age Stereotypes. In addition, Wurm is an editorial board member of the European Journal of Aging and Journal of Gerontopsychology and Geriatric Psychiatry. Wurm also is a GSA fellow, which is the highest class of membership within the Society.
